Job Description

The Hannibal Central School District is seeking a compassionate, student-centered, and collaborative Middle School Counselor to join our team. Our school is committed to fostering a safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environment where every child can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

The successful candidate will play a vital role in supporting the whole child by promoting positive mental health, social-emotional learning, and student success. The school counselor will work closely with students, families, teachers, administrators, and community partners to help meet the diverse needs of our learners.  

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide individual and small-group counseling to students experiencing social, emotional, behavioral, or academic challenges.
  • Design and deliver classroom lessons focused on social-emotional learning, self-regulation, conflict resolution, empathy, and responsible decision-making.
  • Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and support staff to identify and address student needs.
  • Support students during transitions, movement between grade levels, and preparation for high school.
  • Consult with families and provide resources to support student well-being and success.
  • Participate in problem-solving teams, student support meetings, and intervention planning.
  • Coordinate referrals to outside agencies and community services, when appropriate.
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation in accordance with district policies and confidentiality requirements.
  • Respond to students in crisis and provide support during emergencies, as needed.
  • Assist in developing and implementing school-wide initiatives that promote a positive school climate and culture.
  • Advocate for equitable opportunities and support for all students.
Job Qualifications

Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in School Counseling or related field.
  • New York State School Counselor certification.
  • Ability to work effectively with children, families, and school personnel.
  • Strong communication, organization, and collaboration skills.
  • Knowledge of child development, trauma-informed practices, and social-emotional learning.

Preferred Skills and Abilities

  • Experience working in rural schools or small school communities.
  • Familiarity with Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) and data-informed intervention practices.
  • Experience working with middle-school aged students.
